Book marks date back to 1 AD and were primarily used in ancient manuscripts of medicine. Throughout the medieval period, bookmarks were created using a small parchment strip attached to a piece of cord. Printed bookmarks were considered rare and valuable but eventually emerged in the 16th century to prevent damage to book pages.
